Malawians have been encouraged to join hands in conserving wildlife and the environment to achieve the country’s 2063 tourism strategy.
Park Manager for Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, David Nangoma, made the call today during a stakeholders meeting where the reserve’s January to June progress report was presented.
He stressed that the reserve, as a government entity operated hand in hand with African Parks, belongs to all Malawians and generates significant revenue for the country. He also highlighted the dangers of unnecessary bushfires and poaching, which threaten wildlife species, calling upon chiefs to sensitize the local community about the dangers.
Nkhotakota District Council Chairman, Charles Chizukuzuku, praised African Parks for their tireless efforts in managing the environment at Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve.
Chizukuzuku urged stakeholders to take serious action against illegal poaching, advocating for strong punishments for perpetrators.
In the past six months, Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve has discovered 87 new species, according to an entomology survey. The reserve has also been designated as a Key Biodiversity Area, recognising its importance in conservation efforts among other success stories.
