Malawi’s celebrated female footballer, Tabitha Chawinga, has challenged under-16 boys and girls to always aim high and build careers in soccer.
The France-based soccer star was speaking in the capital, Lilongwe, at Lilongwe Golf Club during a meet-and-greet motivation session courtesy of Mpira Mmudzi Wathu, a non-governmental organisation focusing on developing football in the country.
“Football is big business and there are a lot of careers you can build from football. I am today playing in France at a big club because of hard work and that never-give-up spirit,” said Chawinga.
She also commended Mpira Mmudzi Wathu for nurturing talent from a tender age. Chawinga, who is the Scorchers’ captain, has just signed a two-year contract with French champions Olympique Lyonnais.
Mpira Mmudzi Wathu Founding Director, Chimango Munthali, said the organisation is excited to have finally courted Tabitha to give a motivational talk to the kids.
“The idea behind these sessions is to provide an opportunity for young kids to get closer to people that matter. Tabitha is a true definition of how hard work is rewarding, so it is an honour for us as an organisation to have her on board today,” said Munthali, who is also a Football Association of Malawi Executive Member.
Previously, the organization has been able to invite current Flames Coach, Patrick Mabedi, former FAM President, Walter Nyamilandu, former Blantyre City Council Mayor, Noel Chalamanda, as well as former Malawi Defence Force Director of Legal Services, Brigadier General Professor Dan Kuwali for similar motivational talks.
