Chakwera declares State of Disaster in 23 districts

President Lazarus Chakwera has declared a State of National Disaster in 23 districts impacted by the El-Nino weather conditions.

The districts have suffered from irregular rainfall, flooding, and prolonged rainy seasons, leading to a significant decline in agricultural production.

Nearly two million farming households are estimated to have been adversely impacted by these adverse weather conditions.

The Malawi leader said the decision has been informed by a report that he has received from the Ministry of Agriculture, which worked hand in hand with institutions such as UNDP and DoDMA, on his instruction.

Dr Chakwera said the 23 districts have suffered from irregular rainfall, flooding, and prolonged rainy seasons, leading to a significant decline in agricultural production.

Nearly two million farming households are estimated to have been adversely impacted by these adverse weather conditions.

Addressing the public on Saturday night, Dr Chakwera said Malawi is feeling the impact of climate change that has resulted in sporadic rains, floods and dry spells.

He added that 749,113 Hectares of crop production has been affected, representing 44.3 % of national area.
