Chakwera calls for collective approach in ending hunger

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has re-affirmed that Malawi has the potential to grow enough food and end hunger through the mega farms initiative.

Dr Chakwera was speaking at his Lombwa Farm, a model of mega farms in Mchinji District, where 400 hectares of maize have been grown.

The Malawi leader, who called for the private sector to support this drive, said thus far, the crop outlook was impressive.

Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, said the President is committed to making sure that more farmers benefit through the Mega farms initiative, which he said is also helping in job creation.

NBS Bank Chief Executive Officer, Kwanele Ngwenya, said they will continue to support the financing of the Mega Farms initiative in the country as one way of ending hunger.

The Mega farm support unit has distributed over K52 billion in various farm inputs.

At least 722 farmers have benefitted from the Mega Farms initiative across the country and this year’s yield is expected to be around 200,000 metric tonnes from the mega farms across the country.
