CCJP introduces right to food project

Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Karonga Diocese has introduced a three-year right to food project, which is aimed at strengthening the realisation of the right to adequate food in Chitipa District.

Assistant Programme Manager for the Right to Food Project, Stella Zimba Wella, said that her organisation is strengthening the rural governance for adequate rights to food in three Group Village head Temwamukondo, Kalowe and Sekwa in Senior Chief Mwenewenya in the district.

Wella said this on Thursday during extraordinary District Executive Committee meeting were the organisation was introducing a new project titled; Strengthening Rural Governance for the Right to Adequate Food with funding from Deutsch Welthungerhilfe (WHH) amounting to K185, 688,000, which runs for 39-months from 2024 to 2027.

She said the project’s overall objective is progressive governance for the right to food, guided by the principles of participation, transparency, accountability, non-discrimination, and rule of law, for improved food and nutrition security in rural communities.

“We are strengthening the rural governance for adequate rights to food. The main goal is sensitise and advocate for people of Mwenewenya take active role in terms of demanding the services with regards to rights to food,” she said.

Director of Administration for Chitipa District Council, Clement Gonthi, thanked CCJP for introducing a new project , which he said is unique and will empower communities in Wenya to demand for the services.

Gonthi assured CCJP that the district council is ready to work with the organisation in the smooth implementation of the project.
