COMESA Competition Commission (CCC) has hailed governments in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Member States for progressing in the adoption of competition laws and competition institutions.
Chief Executive Officer for the CCC, Dr Willard Mwemba, said this during the opening of the 4th COMESA Competition Commission Diplomatic Conference in Livingstone, Zambia.
Mwemba said 19 out of the 21 countries have adopted the laws and institutions and added that the commission has actively supported the member states in the adoption of these laws through technical assistance programs, capacity buildings and other activities encapsulated in Memorandums of Understandings signed with them.
Secretary General of COMESA, Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, urged member states to actively promote the agriculture sector which is one of the key sectors for most Member States as it contributes more than 32% to the Gross Domestic Product of COMESA.
The Commission has proposed amendments to the COMESA Competition Regulations in an effort to enhance enforcement against anti-competitive business practices and regulation of mergers which may be contributing to increased poverty levels, food inflation and negatively affecting food security.
