Churches Action in Relief and Development (CARD) is celebrating the success of the Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) project, which aims to empower communities in Zomba, Machinga, and Phalombe to become financially self-reliant while combating the effects of climate change and restoring the environment.
The project provides goats, beehives for beekeeping, and start-up funds for eco-friendly businesses to discourage activities that harm the environment.
Louis Thindwa, CARD Field Officer for Zomba, praised the project’s impact adding that beneficiaries are now supporting their families and contributing to environmental restoration.
Emma Liwonde, a single mother of four said after receiving one male goat and four female goats from the project, she has been able to provide for her children and secure food sufficiency. “I no longer worry about where to get manure, as the goat dung provides enough,” she said.
The initiative, part of the “Community-led Planning and Management for Biodiversity Protection and Resilient Communities in the Catchment Area of Lake Chilwa, Malawi” project, is supported by Trocaire, JOA, and the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund.
