Police in Lilongwe have arrested two men for allegedly posing as taxi operators and engaging in assaults and robberies targeting unsuspecting passengers.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Kazembe, 42, of Malenya Village, Traditional Authority (Makanjira), Mangochi, and Moses Mponda, 35, from Madzianyanja Village, T/A M’bwatalika in Lilongwe District.
According to Hastings Chigalu, the Public Relations Officer for Lilongwe Police Station, under the guise of taxi operators, the suspects accompanied by two others provided transportation to a certain man (name withheld) at MRA roundabout at 8 pm on 21 January 2024. He was on his way to Kabudula Trading Centre.
However, upon arrival at Balon Estate along the road, the suspects attacked and robbed the victim. The stolen items were estimated to be worth K700,000.
After receipt of the complaint, Lilongwe Police detectives instituted investigations that led to the arrest of the two suspects.
During the operation, authorities successfully recovered various items, including an MSCE, Diploma and Medical Council certificates and clothes. Chigalu said a manhunt for the other suspects is underway.
Meanwhile, the apprehended suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of robbery.
