Backlog of police cases worries Parliament

Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (PAC) is concerned with the backlog of cases at the Malawi Police Service (MPS), with some individuals waiting years for prosecution while others face lengthy court proceedings.

As PAC met MPS in Lilongwe on Thursday to discuss a long-overdue performance audit report, Chairperson of the committee, Mark Botomani said many people are in police custody and prisons because they have not been taken to court or if taken to court, cases take long to be resolved.

Inspector General of Police Merlyne Yolamu told the committee that they now have 15 qualified lawyers to ease challenges on the prosecution side.

MPS however cited several challenges they are facing including having no control over cases as a result of their collaborative work with the judiciary, saying the police service has to wait for their decisions.

According to PAC, the committee’s meeting with the MPS aims to address different concerns, enhance accountability, and promote a fair and just society for all Malawians.
