AEJ calls on journalists to amplify environmental protection coverage

At the ongoing Annual General Meeting of the Association of Environmental Journalists (AEJ), members have been urged to encourage the public to protect and conserve the environment.

Acting Director of the Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), Tiwonge Mbale Luka, underscored the need for concerted efforts to address environmental challenges.

Luka noted that both the government and the media have a role in ensuring the environment and natural resources are managed sustainably. She argued that there is a gap in coverage and that media professionals need to improve their reporting on all aspects of the environment.

Chairperson of AEJ, Emmanuel Muwamba, acknowledged the gap but noted that the trend of coverage has improved over the past 10 years.

Muwamba also called on various organisations to assist journalists with capacity building so that environmental issues are well covered.

The three-day conference aims to usher in new leaders, award the best environmental reporters, and conclude with a big walk.
