Deputy Minister of Health Halima Daud says Government remains committed to addressing Malawi’s cardiac disease burden through establishment of a Center of Excellence to reduce the number of patients requiring cardiac treatment outside the country.
Daud said this during a 2023 Global Healthcare Conference at the Loma Linda University of the Seventh Day Adventists in the United States of America.
She said during a recent cardiac camp at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, over 600 patients were seen, highlighting the gravity of the burden in the country.
“Government has agreed with other stakeholders in the provision of specialized services in this field. This will see cardiac patients requiring surgery access the services free of charge, for the first time in the country,” she said.
Daud added among other things, Government has since set aside about $370 thousand for the purchase of cardiothoracic surgery equipment.
