New laboratory inline with health strategic plan

Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, has hailed the National Medicine Quality Control Laboratory as a crucial step towards implementing the country’s Health Strategic Plan III and Malawi 2063.

The laboratory was established by the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA).

Chiponda made the remarks in Lilongwe during the launch of the National Medicine Quality Control Laboratory and its accreditation by the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service (SADCAS).

She said with the state-of-the-art laboratory, the country is on right track to effectively combat the circulation of falsified medicines and other substandard health products.

PMRA Board Chairperson, Frida Chimimba, highlighted that the accreditation signifies Malawi’s capacity and international recognition to test and assure the quality of domestically consumed medicines.

The laboratory has been accredited in accordance with the recognized International Organisation for Standardisation standards, effective from February 21, 2024, to February 20, 2029.
