Silver Strikers suffer first defeat

Relegation-threatened TNM Super League side FOMO have secured a stunning 1-0 victory over champions-elect Silver Strikers, handing the league leaders their first defeat of the 2024 season.

In the 84th minute, a defensive lapse by Silver Strikers allowed Prince Kajore to capitalise on a throw-in, slotting home the game’s only goal with composure. His decisive contribution earned him the Man of the Match accolade.

The victory lifts FOMO out of the relegation zone temporarily, moving them to 13th place with 28 points. Despite the loss, Silver Strikers remain at the top of the table with 64 points from 29 matches.

The game began with both teams struggling to establish control. Midfielders Chimwemwe Idana and Lassuli Jali tried to dominate for Silver Strikers, while FOMO enjoyed their share of possession.

In the 10th minute, promising combinations between Chinsisi Maonga and Emmanuel Muira showed Silver Strikers’ attacking intent, though they failed to register a shot on target. FOMO had the first clear chance in the 15th minute, but Charles Thom’s excellent goalkeeping denied them.

Silver Strikers improved their play in the second half, with coach Peter Mponda’s substitutions energising their midfield.

Uchizi Vunga, Idana and Jali orchestrated swift attacks, but FOMO’s defence and goalkeeper, inspired by their home crowd, remained resolute.

Despite staging late attacks, including a missed header by Stanie Davie, Silver Strikers could not find an equaliser.

In post-match interviews, FOMO coach Elvis Kafoteka attributed the win to his team’s fighting spirit.

“Let me thank God and congratulate the boys. I told them to take this game as if their lives depend on it,” he said, adding that the battle is not over as they prepare for their final game against Karonga United.

Silver Strikers coach Peter Mponda expressed disappointment in his team’s performance.

“We won the league with the Wanderers game; maybe the guys were too relaxed. I knew complacency would sink in,” he remarked.

Elsewhere in the League, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers claimed second place with 55 points after a 1-1 draw against Creck Sporting. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets secured third place with a 3-1 victory over Karonga United, taking their tally to 52 points. Chitipa United defeated Moyale Barracks 2-0 in the Northern Region.

In the relegation battle, the bottom three currently include: 14th place Bangwe All Stars (27 points), 15th place Chitipa United (26 points) and 16th place Baka City, already relegated, with 13 points.
