Eye expert tells parents to limit children’s screen exposure

An Eye Specialist at Mzuzu Central Hospital, Dr Patty Mopamboli, has stressed the importance of eye health in children, particularly due to their increased exposure to screens from televisions, smartphones and tablets.

Dr Mopamboli said this during the commemorations of World Sight Day, under the theme “Children, Love Your Eyes”.

A lecturer in the Optometry Department at Mzuzu University, Dr Grace Ogbonna, added that this year’s campaign calls for comprehensive eye care in schools and within public health policies to safeguard children’s vision.

Meanwhile, public health facilities in the country such as Mzuzu Central Hospital, continue to provide different eye care services after noting that cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and refractive errors are contributing to vision impairments in Malawi.
