Journalists key to curbing misinformation — MEC, MHRC

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, has urged Malawians to avoid misinformation as it has the potential to confuse people especially during elections time.

Mtalimanja said this in Lilongwe on Thursday when she opened a two-day 2024 Annual Media and Access to Information Conference.

She pleaded with the media to promote free flow of information and avoid disinformation by checking facts.

Commissioner Teresa Ndanga of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) said the political landscape can become volatile with misinformation, especially when money and other material things are at stake during campaign period.

Ndanga, who is also an established media practitioner, urged the media to follow professionalism, accuracy and balance when reporting to reflect the truth.

The conference has brought together media stakeholders who are deliberating on the theme “Promoting free flow of information towards 2025 General Election”.
