Dedza to vaccinate 15,000 dogs

In a bid to control the spread of rabies in Dedza District, animal health rights campaigners are planning to vaccinate over 15,000 dogs in the district.

Dedza District Animal Health and Development Officer, Isaac Gondwe, said the exercise is expected to cover 80 percent of the estimated population of dogs and cats.

This comes as the district is registering 120 dog bites every month, which Gondwe described as a health hazard.

“Our target is to vaccinate dogs and cats in hot spots areas of Dedza border, Bembeke, Lobi, Golomoti, Mayani, Chafumbwa and Kabwazi,” he observed.

Meanwhile, Dedza District Hospital publicist, Mwayi Liabunya, has urged residents to seek rabies vaccination whenever they have been bitten by dogs.
