Grem Chilomo, General Secretary for the Triathlon Union of Malawi says the triathlon sport in the country has the potential to win international medals, given the athletes’ swimming, running, and cycling skills.
Chilomo made these remarks during the Northern Region 2024 Triathlon tournament, held on Saturday at the Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu.
The event saw athletes from Nkhatabay, Mzuzu and surrounding areas compete in a triathlon that tested their swimming, cycling, and running skills.
“We need support from well-wishers to help us financially so that we reach out to all the lakeshore districts in the country with the tournament,” said Chilomo.
Billy Sakala from the National Bank of Malawi — who witnessed the tournament in Mzuzu, said they are interested in supporting the sport’s growth. However, he advised the secretariat to follow the proper procedures to get financial support from the bank.
In a triathlon, athletes first compete in a swimming segment, followed by a cycling race, and then a running race — all without breaks. The athlete who finishes first across all three events is declared the winner.
