SWAM to host World Sports Day

Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) has announced plans to host the country’s first-ever World Sports Journalists Day celebrations, which will be held on 2 July in Blantyre.

General Secretary for SWAM, Wesysylas Chirwa, said the day recognises the vital role of sports journalists in
promoting integrity, unity and excellence through ethical reporting.

“We believe the time is right for Malawi to join the rest of the world in honouring the role of sports journalists, who continue to shape and safeguard the soul of our sporting identity. This is our way of recognising their contribution,” Chirwa said.

Earlier, Chief Executive Officer for the Malawi National Council of Sports, Henry Kamata, had urged sports journalists to be agents of change.

“Sports serves as a conduit that connects people who love sports and the game, so when writing, it is imperative to write stories that inspire communities and shape perceptions about sports,” Kamata said.

The event’s theme is “Sports Journalism for Integrity, Peace & Inclusivity”, and there shall be activities such as solidarity walks, media dialogue, netball and football friendlies, exhibitions, and mentorship sessions.

According to SWAM executives, they seek a total of K20.79 million from the corporate world to support logistics, awards, student mentorship and media activities.

The day was created in 1994 by the International Sports Press Association.
