Women from across Southern Africa have been urged to remain rooted in faith and live with purpose, despite the growing hardships facing the region. This was the key message as the Baptist Women’s Union of Southern Africa (BWUSA) began its four-day regional conference in Lilongwe.
The gathering has brought together women from Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Swaziland, Kenya, and Namibia. Hosted at the African Bible College, the event focuses on prayer, leadership, healing, and empowerment.
President of the Baptist Convention of Malawi, Reverend Madalitso Matekenya, opened the conference by encouraging women to remain strong in faith.

“We are in dark times, but women must keep praying and acting according to God’s calling,” he said.
“When you support a woman, you support a nation hence throwing our weight behind this conference,” added Reverend Matekenya.
Guest speaker, Reverend Naomi Chaane, President of BWUSA, described the gathering as a time of renewal and spiritual alignment.

“God created us with a purpose. We’re here to rediscover that,” she said.
On her part, President of the Baptist Women’s Union of Malawi, Jacqueline Kalenga, said the meeting was a blessing for Malawian women.

“A woman of purpose is focused, prayerful, and courageous.
“Through this conference the women will share a lot of strategies to cope with the present challenges,” said Kalenga.
The conference runs until 3 August 2025. It is being held under the theme: ‘Women of Purpose.’
