QECH’s neurosurgery unit calls for support as patient numbers rise

Neurosurgery Department at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre has raised concerns over the increasing number of patients requiring surgery, urging for support to upgrade its equipment.

Deputy Director for QECH, Dr William Peno made the remarks in Blantyre when FDH Bank donated K5 million ahead of the department’s 10th anniversary next month.

He said on a monthly basis, the department receives about 20 patients that need to be operated; a number Dr Peno said is too high as compared to the equipment the department has.

He said road accidents are in part responsible for the high number of patients that require operations in the head and spinal cord.

FDH bank Head of Marketing, Levie Nkunika said they decided to make the donation bearing in mind that the department is crucial in the health sector.
