PRISAM has expressed its appreciation to President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s decision to increase university students’ upkeep allowances by 60 percent, from K350,000 to K560,000 per academic year.
PRISAM President, Enerst Kaonga, said the directive, issued a few weeks ago, demonstrates the President’s commitment to addressing the rising cost of living and supporting underprivileged students in higher learning institutions.
“The recent announcement by the Minister of Finance, Simplex Chithyola, in Parliament further confirmed Dr Chakwera’s dedication to improving the financial situation of students. As an association, PRISAM believes that this increase will greatly alleviate the financial challenges faced by many students and contribute to the overall development of education standards in Malawi,” said Kaonga.
“We commend President Chakwera for his leadership and his genuine concern for the welfare and performance of students. PRISAM remains committed to upholding quality education standards in all its affiliated institutions and supporting the government’s efforts in the education sector,” added Kaonga.
Similarly, the Chief Executive Officer for Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC), Benedicto Kondowe hailed government for increasing the upkeep allowance.
“By bolstering the allowance, the government cultivates an environment where students can excel academically without the burden of financial constraints,” Kondowe said.
