Police finally arrest suspected driver in the Chibavi road accident

Police in Mzuzu have arrested Pilirani Mhango who is suspected to have been driving a Ford Explorer that was involved in a road accident on Wednesday that claimed the lives of four people and left two more with serious injuries.

Northern Region Police spokesperson, Maurice Chapola, has confirmed to MBC Digital.

According to Chapola, Mhango was driving from Saint John of God heading towards Chibavi Market and upon arrival at Tukumphire Lodge, he lost control of the vehicle allegedly due to speeding and swerved to the far right where he hit six pedestrians, including a lady who had a baby on her back.

Two men and the woman sustained severe head injuries while a child who was on the woman’s back sustained internal body injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

The others sustained minor injuries.

Mhango, 29, hails from Vokolani Village in Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District and he will appear before court once investigations are concluded.
