PARLIAMENT URGED TO SCRAP SMARTPHONE TAXES

The Ministry of Information and Digitalisation and MACRA have joined calls to lobby Parliament to temporarily suspend taxes on smartphones for the next two financial years.

Minister of Information and Digitisation, Moses Kunkuyu and MACRA’s Director General, Daud Suleman, believe this move will lower smartphone prices and promote digital inclusion.

Speaking in Phalombe during the launch of MACRA’s Connect a Teacher Training College initiative, they emphasised President Chakwera’s commitment to affordable smart gadgets and reduced data costs.

As part of the Connect a School Project, 10 Teacher Training Colleges will receive 15 state-of-the-art computers, starting with Phalombe TTC. MACRA also donated 20 computers to Phalombe Secondary School.

Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, commended the collaboration.

“This enhances education standards,” said Wirima.
