NGO-GCN denounce political violence

NGO Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN) has condemned political violence against women in the country.

Chairperson of NGO-GCN, Maggie Kathewera Banda expressed the concern in Lilongwe at a press briefing.

“Women should be given an opportunity to contest and have a word on political issues. It is high time that law enforcers investigate and take action to end this,” she added.

She mentioned a number of cases involving women being politically harassed like the Ndirande incident in Blantyre and an attack of the Minister of Higher Education, who is also the Malawi Congress Party Publicity Secretary, Jessie Kabwila in Machinga.

Kathewera Banda also condemned some political parties who were calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja.

She then called for religious leaders, Parliament and stakeholders to protect women in politics.
