National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) says it is fully prepared for this year’s maize purchasing exercise following a K100 billion allocation from the government to support the programme.
NFRA Chief Executive Officer, Bruce Munthali, made the assurance on Saturday after inspecting the agency’s maize silos in Mzuzu ahead of this year’s maize purchasing exercise.
He said the agency has completed maintenance works on storage facilities nationwide to ensure maize is safely preserved and the country’s strategic grain reserves are adequately maintained.
Mzuzu maize silos has a total capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes consisting of five metallic silos, each capable of storing 4,000 metric tonnes.
The annual maize purchasing exercise is expected to help strengthen the country’s food security by building strategic grain reserves, while providing farmers with a ready market for their produce.
