Karonga District First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Richman Mwandalo, 23, to 10 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour for endangering the safety of persons travelling by road and robbery at Lufilya Bridge in the district.
Between 4 and 5 April 2024, Mwandalo and four others who have been acquitted, blocked the road at Lufilya bridge with water pipes and stones and robbed Steven Mvula of money amounting to K208,000.
State Prosecutor, Yolam Kanyenda, told the court that on the stated night, the victim recorded the voice of his attackers in the process where he managed to capture Mwandalo on video before he got robbed.
Mwandalo pleaded guilty to the charges. In mitigation, he asked the court for leniency, stating that he is young and has responsibilities, but Magistrate Ezekiel Kamtikana handed him a strong penalty.
