Government says it will encourage farmers to adopt environmentally friendly energy alternatives such as biogas produced from livestock waste.
Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change Patricia Wiskes made the remarks after visiting farmers using biogas under an initiative being implemented by EcoGen and its partners in Chiradzulu.
Wiskes said the Ministry, together with its cooperating partners, will work to ensure that more farmers benefit from the project.
She has since urged dairy farmers to install biodigesters to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal for cooking, while also using the by-products to produce organic fertiliser.
One of the beneficiaries from Traditional Authority Mpama, Esther Njoka, said the technology, which her family has been using since 2024, has transformed their lives.
Njoka said, apart from using biogas for cooking, the production of organic fertiliser has helped the family improve its crop yields.
Meanwhile, one of the project’s financiers, Klik Foundation, has expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.
Director of Carbon Procurement at Klik Foundation, Darja Aepli, said one of the organisation’s key objectives is to contribute towards reducing deforestation.
EcoGen, in partnership with Klik Foundation, Sistema Bio, Act group and government, is implementing a technology that converts livestock waste into biogas for cooking, while the resulting organic material is used as fertiliser.
