Govt committed to SADC regional cooperation

Government says it remains fully committed to regional cooperation under the SADC framework and to the aspirations of Malawi 2063.

Minister of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism Simon Itaye made the remarks in Lilongwe, where he presided over the official opening of the 49th Annual General Meeting of the Committee of Insurance, Securities and Non-Banking Financial Authorities, being hosted by the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

The meeting, which brings together regulators and industry leaders, provides a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and strengthening financial sector regulation across the region.

Itaye noted that the financial landscape is changing rapidly; as such, it demands stronger cooperation among regulators, more effective information-sharing mechanisms and coordinated supervisory responses.

According to Itaye, as financial markets become more interconnected, regional cooperation must evolve from information exchange to practical implementation and coordinated action.

He therefore said the discussions align closely with Malawi 2063, a national vision of an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant industrialised upper-middle-income country.

Reserve Bank Governor George Partridge emphasised the need for the bloc to build financial systems that are strong enough to protect entrepreneurs and carry Southern Africa towards shared prosperity.
