MALAWI BROADCASTING CORPORATION (MBC)

 

Introduction and Background

The Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is Malawi’s national public service broadcaster, established in 1964. Originally operating as a single radio service (now MBC Radio 1), the Corporation has since expanded to include Radio 2 FM and national television services following the merger of MBC and Television Malawi Limited in 2011. Established under the Communications Act, 2016, MBC is mandated to inform, educate, and entertain the public; promote free and informed opinion on matters of national interest; reflect Malawi’s cultural diversity; and uphold human rights, the rule of law, and constitutional values through objective, professional, and independent programming. In pursuit of its strategic mandate and institutional growth, MBC now seeks to recruit suitably qualified and experienced Malawian professionals to fill the following Executive Management positions:

1. DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMES
2. DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING
3. DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

The three positions are tenable at the MBC Head Office in Blantyre on a three (3)-year employment contract. These are highly demanding executive roles requiring individuals with proven leadership capacity and the ability to drive operational excellence, institutional transformation, sound human resource management, and administrative innovation aimed at positioning MBC as a rejuvenated, vibrant, and competitive public service broadcaster.

1. DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMES
2. Job Purpose

To direct, coordinate, and define the creative vision, strategic direction, and scheduling of content for TV and radio networks.

 

1. Required Academic Qualifications

• Master’s and Bachelor’s Degreesin Journalism, Humanities (majoring in English or Drama), or Communication and Cultural Studies from accredited institutions.

1. Relevant Work Experience

• At least eight (8) years’ experiencein a relevant field.

 

1. Key Competencies and Skills

1. Strong creative vision and content development skills
2. Ability to evaluate programming using audience surveys and feedback
3. Real-time decision-making during live broadcasts
4. Budget planning and expenditure monitoring
5. Collaboration with commercial teams to maximize audience engagement
6. Performance management and team coordination
7. Knowledge of broadcasting regulations and guidelines

2. DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING
3. Job Purpose

To lead technical teams, manage infrastructure, ensure 24/7 reliability of TV and radio signals and ICT systems, ensure FCC compliance, lead strategic technical upgrades, and oversee maintenance of the Engineering directorate.

 

1. Required Academic Qualifications

• Master’s Degreein Engineering (Electrical, Telecommunications, Electronics, or Information Systems) from accredited institutions.

1. Relevant Work Experience

• At least eight (8) years’ experiencein managing an engineering or broadcasting operations workforce.

1. Key Competencies and Skills

1. Planning and design of station and Outside Broadcasting (OB) systems
2. Quality control of all installations
3. FCC compliance management
4. Capital planning and budget input
5. Troubleshooting of automated workflows, on-premise hardware/software, and cloud services
6. Management of technical signal distribution, monitoring, and routing infrastructure
7. Internal business process improvement

3. DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
4. Job Purpose

To ensure effective and efficient utilization and accountability of financial resources for the Corporation to become self-sufficient on a sustainable basis.

 

1. Required Academic and Professional Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s Degreein Accounting or Finance from accredited institutions plus a professional qualification such as ACCA, CIMA, ICAM, CPA, etc.
• A Master’s Degreein a relevant discipline from accredited institutions.

 

1. Relevant Work Experience

• At least eight (8) years’ experiencein a senior position at a reputable public or private institution.

 

1. Key Competencies and Skills

1. Financial management and control systems development
2. Budget consolidation and board reporting
3. Preparation of quarterly and annual management accounts
4. Payment authorization and financial compliance
5. Legal and corporate requirements enforcement
6. Performance appraisal and staff supervision
7. Provision of secretarial services to the Finance and Audit Committee
