ECAMA tips govt on reducing expenditure

The Economic Association of Malawi (ECAMA) has advised the government to plan within its means and reduce borrowing to enable the country’s economy to recover.

ECAMA President, Bertha Chikadza, made the call during a mid-year budget review analysis in Lilongwe with the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Budget and other committees.

While acknowledging the government’s recent efforts to curb borrowing, Chikadza emphasised the need for realistic assumptions to ensure that projections align with on-the-ground realities.

Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Budget Chairperson, Gladys Ganda, noted that the government has implemented positive containment measures to avoid spending beyond budgetary limits.

Ganda, however, expressed concern over the decline in revenue collection by the Malawi Revenue Authority. She said that the committee would engage the institution and the Ministry of Finance to ensure the economy
