Drop in maize prices excites LL consumers

A Spot check by MBC has revealed a drop in maize prices in Lilongwe, bringing relief to many households.

In January, a 50 kg bag of maize was selling for K100,000, but as of April, prices have fallen to as low as K42,500 in some areas.

Richard Jamali of Chimbiri village in the area of Traditional Authority Chingala in Mitundu said the reduction of maize prices will ease the hunger situation that people have faced in the past few months.

Christina Chakhaza from Bilimoni village in TA Chiseka, who was purchasing maize during the visit to Mitundu, said she can now afford enough maize for her family at the current prices.

Consumers in Mpingu, Msundwe, Chigwirizano Mpondamali and Mitundu are benefiting from the price decline. In Chigwirizano, the highest price for a 50 kg bag is at K55,000, which translates to 1100 per kg.

In Mitundu, a 50 kg bag is fetching between K42,000 and K50,000.
