Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Halima Daudi says chiefs have a crucial role to play in bringing unity amongst Malawians.
She said this at Phalombe Teachers Training College Ground when she installed Traditional Authorities Nyezelela and Chiwalo of Phalombe.
“I urge you to be at the forefront of fighting nepotism. It retards development and cannot help Malawi overcome the challenges the country is experiencing,” Daudi said.
In his remarks, Presidential Advisor on Chiefs, Moses Kunkuyu advised the newly installed chiefs to be apolitical in their work, leading their subjects by example.
“Do not oppress your people. Lead them by example. Be at the forefront with good deeds and your subjects may follow suit,” he said.
Earlier, Senior Chief Kaduya of Phalombe asked the government to install more chiefs in the district.
Mphatso Samphanya is the 6th Traditional Authority Nyezelela whereas Davie Banda is the new Traditional Authority Chiwalo of Phalombe.
