Malawi’s Vice President, Dr Jane Ansah, has called for urgent development of the Nacala railway corridor.
She said this during the 7th AU-EU Summit in Luanda, Angola.
Dr Ansah said this is key for Malawi to compete in international trade. She also emphasised that agriculture and export-led industrialisation are the backbone of Malawi’s growth.
Through the National Export Strategy, Malawi has built strong export value chains.
These include macadamia, soybean oil cake, sunflower, rubber, cashew nuts, coffee, and other produce.
These products connect Malawi to regional and global markets.
But she warned, “Malawi’s challenge is connectivity. The Nacala Development Corridor is the country’s main route to international markets. It is the most cost-effective path”.
Dr Ansah also appealed for investment to upgrade the railway, which links Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia.
The AU-EU Summit, themed “Promoting Peace through Effective Multilateralism,” brought together leaders from 27 EU states and 55 AU states. Malawi was represented by Dr Jane Ansah.
The two-day summit, which began yesterday, is now closing after successful discussions.
