Three young women entrepreneurs, known as Young Mama’s Nest, have launched a life-changing initiative for teenage mothers in Makalani Village, Traditional Authority Njelwa, Lilongwe.
They are training 150 women in baking, cookery, tailoring, poultry farming and village banking.
Leader of the group, Faith Simkonda, says the initiative aims to equip young mothers with entrepreneurial skills and starter kits, backed with funding from the group’s savings.
Simkonda says the idea was hatched after noting the teen pregnancies, Gender Based Violence and child malnutrition among the target group, driven by financial struggles in Makalani Village.
“This is a part of a larger effort to empower women and reduce dependency on men for survival from the area”.
