A citizen of the United States of America, Teneil Jayne has constructed a two-kilometre slab road at Bwelero in the area of Sub-Traditional Authority Mndola in Nkhata Bay, aiming to ease mobility challenges.
During the road handover ceremony on Thursday, Jayne said that the difficulties people face in accessing medical services motivated her to mobilise resources for the project.
“I have stayed in Nkhata Bay for about eight years now. One of the major problems I noticed is the lack of transport for people to access medical services,” she said. “Expectant women struggle to hike down the mountains as the roads are impassable.”
Rodgers Newa, Nkhata Bay District Commissioner, commended Jayne for her gesture in improving the condition of the road, noting that it has opened “a door of opportunities.”
Newa also urged partners and well-wishers to continue supporting the government’s efforts in development projects of the district.
Mary Banda, a resident from the area, said that the road has connected them to several services that they had previously struggled to access.
“For ages, we have been unable to use this road, either by car or on foot. The situation was worse during the rainy season,” she said.
