Farmers in Group Village Nkaju in Zomba are anticipating increased annual yields with the construction of a solar-powered Nanyanga Irrigation Scheme.
Supported by the United Nations Development Partners (UNDP) through the Transformation of Agriculture by Building Resilience and Harnessing Green Opportunities (TARGO) programme, the K358 million project aims to uplift agriculture in communities.
Speaking during a media tour on Tuesday, Group Village Nkaju said construction of the irrigation scheme has put to rest their fears of possible hunger.
“We are hopeful that we will be cultivating three times a year,” he said.
Cynthia Wochi, one of the farmers to benefit from the scheme, said she expects to cultivate a variety of crops that would boost both food security and her economic incomes.
“I plan to divide my farm and plant tomatoes, onion, and maize. The scheme is an answer to my players,” she said.
Edward Chinkhata, Irrigation Officer for Zomba District Council, said establishing irrigation schemes is part of the plans to boost crop yield at the household level.
Chinkhata said with the effects of climate change, irrigation farming is key.
The scheme is expected to benefit up to 120 farmers, allowing them to practice winter cropping to increase their agricultural productivity for enhanced food security and household income.
