President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has appealed to Malawians to reflect on the significant role that ex-military soldiers played in their service while supporting the Poppy Appeal Week.
Speaking at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe when he inaugurated the Poppy Appeal Week, the Malawi leader said it is imperative to be mindful of the wellbeing of those who made it back home alive from the two world wars by supporting them, stressing that the government is working towards improving the lives of the war veterans.
Chairperson of the Veterans and Ex-Service League of Malawi General Henry Odillo (Retired) said they intend to raise K200 million during the week, which will be used to assist military veterans through maintenance of war memorial homes.
Dr Chakwera has purchased the first poppy at K2 million.
The Poppy Appeal Week was established in 1918 following the end of World Wars.
Malawi will commemorate the World Poppy Day on 10 November 2024.
