In a bid to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, Rumphi District Hospital officials have joined the world in cautioning people against the dangers of self-medication.
Public Relations Officer for Rumphi District Hospital, Esau Mkamanga, emphasised the risks associated with using antibiotics without medical guidance on Thursday on the sidelines of World Antimicrobial Stewardship Awareness Week.
“Using antibiotics without being instructed by medical professionals is perilous, leading to drug resistance and complications. We urge people to consult doctors before taking antibiotics,” he said.
World Antimicrobial stewardship awareness week is observed annually from November 18-24 with the aim of promoting responsible antimicrobial use, raise awareness about Antimicrobial resistance and encourage global action.
This year’s theme, “Antimicrobial Stewardship: A Shared Responsibility,” underscores the need for collective action in addressing the pressing public health issue.
