Promoting sports in schools vital — Sports Minister

Minister of Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, who is Member of Parliament for Karonga South, has emphasized the importance of promoting football and netball at grassroots level, particularly in primary schools, to develop sports in the country.

He was speaking during the finals of the Uchizi Mkandawire Primary Schools Netball and Football Trophy at Uliwa Primary School Ground.

“You have seen the talent that is in primary schools and if we can develop the skill, it will help to build stronger football and netball for our national teams,” Mkandawire said, while encouraging fellow MPs to promote sports in their areas too.

Primary Education Advisor for Fulirwa Zone, Canaan Kabango, said the tournament has boosted enrolment and performance in local schools.

In the football category, Chinonga Primary School won against Chisumbu Primary School 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, taking home K350,000, a trophy, medals, new jerseys and a ball. In netball, Chinonga Primary School defeated Chiduli Primary School 34-21.
