In an effort to continue supporting El Niño response efforts, Norway has pledged an amount of $5.2 million (approximately K9.3 billion) for Malawi’s food imports, maize supplies and school feeding programme.
During the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the World Food Programme (WFP), Ambassador for Norway, Ingrid Marie Mikelsen, emphasised Norway’s commitment to ensuring that her country’s 25 years of development progress in Malawi is not undone by the crisis.
The contribution follows President Chakwera’s appeal for aid earlier this year.
Country Director for WFP Malawi, Paul Turnbull, expressed gratitude and noted that while the food security sector is well funded, gaps remain in health, education and agriculture.
Norway’s contribution is expected to reach out to approximately 544,000 people through procurement of about 3,130 metric tonnes of maize for distribution, school feeding programme materials and child nutrition.
