No love lost for Kamwendo

Ex-Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos striker has come back to haunt his former side on Sunday afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, opening the scoring for Mighty Wanderers before teammate Isaac Kaliati sealed the victory with a second goal.

This means Wanderers is now on the apex of the TNM Super League with 22 points from eight games, all unbeaten, while Dedza now ranks 7th with 13 points.

Kamwendo, who left Dedza on a free transfer last season, broke the deadlock, finishing off a cross from winger Wisdom Mpinganjira, to give Wanderers an early lead — sending the home fans into a frenzy.

This is his third goal in the league.

The visitors struggled to settle as Wanderers continued to dominate possession.

Gerald Ngwira and Blessings Singini had chances to increase the lead but their efforts missed the target.

Dedza had a rare moment of promise just before the break, but were denied by Wanderers’ solid defence, led by captain Stanley Sanudi.

Dedza came out pressing in the second half in search of an equaliser.

However, their momentum was disrupted after a collision between Kamwendo and Dedza’s goalkeeper, Donnex Mwakasinga, who required medical attention.

In the 56th minute, Isaac Kaliati doubled the lead with a precise finish from a free-kick and making it an uphill task for the away team.

Kaliati continued to threaten with another close free-kick in the 62nd minute, while Dedza made multiple substitutions in an attempt to respond.

Despite fresh legs from both benches—including Francisco Madinga and Blessings Mwalilino for Wanderers, Gift Kasambala and Yasin Chida for Dedza—the visitors failed to mount a comeback.

At the end of the match, Isaac Kaliati, was voted as the Man-of-the-Match.

Coach for Mighty Wanderers, Bob Mpinganjira, said the early goal was crucial for their win.

“We did well. We scored early, and that is what we planned, so it worked. But then, we could have scored more goals, but we did not; this happens in football. I am satisfied with the two goals that we scored,” Mpinganjira said.

Coach for Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos, Alex Ngwira, defended his side’s dismal performance in the first half due to the ‘magnitude of the game’.

Ngwira: “The players were afraid”

“Mighty Wanderers is another big team in Malawi. Now, these guys, after seeing the supporters, it was like they were lost and their reactions were improper.

In the second half, we did not finish well because of the fear and were not bold enough to utilise chances,” Ngwira said.

League action returns on Wednesday. Among the most notable games is that of defending champions, Silver Strikers, who will be up against Karonga United at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

Second-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will face Moyale Barracks at Kamuzu Stadium.
