The city of Windhoek in Namibia is set to hold a state funeral of the country’s third Republican President, Dr Hage Geingob.
Dr Geingob died on 4 February, 2024 and since then, the country had been observing a mourning period.
The late Namibian President was a veteran of the Namibian liberation and that country’s prime minister for 12 years of their 33 years of independence.
He ascended to the Presidency in 2015 and until his demise, he was serving his second term.
Affectionately called “the peoples president” by most Namibians, the country is now set to give him a befitting farewell; first, a memorial service at Independence Stadium on Saturday and then a burial ceremony at the Heros Acre on Sunday.
Late Geingob was also a prominent regional figure, leading the Southern African Development Community (SADC) between 2018 and 2019. He also led the regional group’s organ on politics, defence and security.
Regional leaders, including Malawi’s President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, will join Namibians in giving Dr Geingob a dignified farewell as he walks his last mile.
