Msusa calls for collective efforts in poverty alleviation

Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of the Blantyre Archdiocese has urged Malawians to collaborate with the government and non-governmental organiations (NGOs) to combat poverty.

Msusa said this during a cash disbursement event at Lowe Court in Chiradzulu District where he stressed that every citizen has a role to play in ensuring Malawi’s 61 years of independence translates into meaningful development.

The event, organised under the Dream Project, saw over 1000 vulnerable households receive financial assistance to help them recover from the devastating effects of El Niño-induced droughts, which is being implemented by the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) with funding from the US Government.

Archbishop Msusa commended the initiative, saying it provides much-needed relief to families struggling with food insecurity and economic hardships.

However, he urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly, emphasizing that the aid should be directed towards essential needs such as food, farming inputs, or small-scale businesses to ensure long-term sustainability.

Msusa also called on leaders and citizens alike to prioritize unity and shared responsibility in addressing Malawi’s challenges.

Malawi has faced severe food shortages due to prolonged dry spells linked to El Niño, leaving millions in need of humanitarian assistance. Chiradzulu is among the hardest-hit districts.
