MPs in Mangochi accused of abandoning constituencies

Local leaders in Mangochi have accused some legislators in the district of abandoning constituencies that ushered them into power following the establishment of new constituencies by the Malawi Electoral Commission.

According to traditional leaders, most members of Parliament are focusing on the newly demarcated constituencies, a move described as detrimental to development.

One of the traditional leaders, senior Group Village Head Chindamba of Malindi said, “I can comfortably say Mangochi North East has no Member of Parliament because the one we elected shifted to concentrate on the newly demarcated area.”

The GVH added, “All this time our Ward Councillor Hassan Chikuta has been the one taking the role of an MP and if it was not for him, the suffering could have been too much.”

Chindamba made the remarks in Malindi Ward at a development rally organised by Chikuta, Malawi Congress Party councillor for the ward.

Chikuta expressed intent to continue taking up the role of initiating development in the area.

In response,  parliamentarian for the constituency, Idi Kalos, said while it is true that he is vying for the newly demarcated constituency, he is still initiating development activities in Mangochi North East.
