Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) has urged the government, development partners, and communities to strengthen eye health systems in Malawi.
The call comes as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Sight Day 2025 on Friday (09 October, 2025) which is themed “Love Your Eyes.”
IMHEN Executive Director, George Jobe, said the commemoration serves as a timely reminder of the importance of making eye care accessible, available and affordable for everyone, everywhere.
“Eye health is a critical component of overall wellbeing, education, and productivity. Yet many Malawians, especially those in rural areas, continue to face challenges in accessing quality eye care services,” said Jobe.
He pointed out that a shortage of trained professionals, inadequate equipment and low public awareness about preventable eye conditions have left many people vulnerable to avoidable vision loss.
Jobe also expressed concern that many Malawians seek medical attention only after their sight has deteriorated, making treatment difficult.
“We urge all Malawians to go for regular eye check-ups and take early action. Early detection and timely care can prevent blindness and improve one’s quality of life,” he emphasided.
World Sight Day is observed annually on 9th October, aiming to raise global awareness about the importance of eye health and preventing vision impairment.
