The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has officially declared Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidates as the winner of Chilanga, Rukuru and Kaporo wards during the just ended by-elections in Karonga District.
MEC Chairperson, Justice Chifundo Kachale, made the declaration at Maghemo Secondary School where the commission had established its tally Centre.
There was jubilation from MCP members after he announced the results.
According to Kachale, 21 candidates competed the for seats.
Alick Ng’oma is the newly elected councillor for Chilanga Ward after getting 1516 votes.
Gift Kumbukani Mwale will represent Rukuru Ward as after obtaining 5854 votes while King Ngayambimba Mvula is the new councillor for Kaporo Ward after scooping 1662 votes.
Kachale later said the local by-elections in the three wards had been conducted fairly and had set a good example for the district and the country.
He further said MEC will sensitise communities in the country, through councils, on the new electoral laws.
Kachale has since asked the councillors to desist from corruption as this was what led to the imprisonment of the three former councillors.
