Police in Mzimba have arrested a 29-year-old man Moses Phiri for allegedly breaking into the residence of Lontia Manda and stealing K11 million in cash.
The incident occurred on Monday at Jenda Section 2C in Mzimba.
It was established that Manda, a manager at Joel Traders in the district, had taken the cash home for safekeeping, intending to hand it over to her boss. However, the suspect seized the opportunity that same night, breaking into Manda’s house and making off with the entire sum.
Eventually, “Phiri reported the incident to us [Jenda Police Station] where we launched an investigation which led to the arrest of the suspect,” said Macfarlane Mseteka, Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police Station.
Phiri also guided the police to the house of the suspect’s father at Shayona in Kasungu, where K10 million was discovered concealed in a small plastic bag in a maize field.
Phiri faces charges of burglary, while his father, Felson Phiri, 54, has been charged with receiving stolen property contrary to sections 309(2) and 328 of the Penal Code, respectively.
The duo, residents of Gawanani Village, Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu District, is set to appear in court pending the completion of necessary paperwork.
