The decision to send Malawi’s Boys and Girls Schools National teams to the CAF African Schools Championship (COSAFA) Qualifiers by road, rather than by air, has divided opinion among football stakeholders.
The teams are en route to Namibia and are expected to arrive tomorrow, Thursday, ahead of the tournament, which will take place from October 11-13, 2024, in Walvis Bay, Namibia.
Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA) President Blackson Malamula, said Football Association of Malawi (FAM) provided K100 million for the trip and therefore road transport was the only viable option.
Malamula further added that the road trip is also an educational experience for the young athletes, allowing them to visit historical sites along the journey.
However, sports analyst Kelvin Moyo has criticized the decision, dismissing the educational justification as baseless.
Moyo expressed concern that the long road trip will likely lead to fatigue, which could impact heavily on the teams’ performance at the tournament.
A total of 38 players have made the trip.
