Income in the country’s non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector has increased from K1.02 trillion in 2025 to K1.30 trillion in 2026, despite some organisations closing due to funding challenges.
Presenting the 2026 NGO Sector Report in Lilongwe, NGO Regulatory Authority (NGORA) Chief Executive Officer Voice Mhone said the sector generated US$568 million (approximately K987 billion), surpassing tobacco earnings of US$540 million (approximately K938 billion) recorded in 2025.
However, the report shows the employment of people by the NGO Sector has reduced from 28,680 in 2025 to 22,096 in 2026, representing a 23 percent reduction.
Reacting to the report, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha said she was impressed with an increase in the number of NGOs who are disclosing and submitting their financial reports.
Navicha therefore encouraged NGOs to align its priority areas with Malawi 2063, saying the sector is critical in as far as fostering development is concerned.
At the event, Navicha hailed the NGO Sector for financial sustainability.
However, she was quick to urge different NGOs to diversify their funding sources, be compliant with the law, and be accountable and transparent in their operations.
