LCC against loud and irritating music in residential areas

Lilongwe City Council says playing loud and irritating music that affects public health in residential areas constitutes noise pollution.

Chief Executive Officer for LCC, Dr Macloud Kadam’manja, said liquor shops already operating illegally in residential areas should not operate as bars and play loud music day and night.

He added that as one way of dealing with noise pollution emanating from bars, LCC, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will start conducting patrols in affected areas.

Malawi’s Public Health Act describes noise pollution as a nuisance.

The Act further stipulates that if a person does not comply with a notice to stop a nuisance, the local authorities have the power to take that person to court, and if found liable, they may be fined or risk having their place closed.
